Rep. Steve Cohen, the Democrat congressman from Memphis who apparently has nothing better to do for his constituents, just introduced six articles of impeachment against Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts. Not five. Not seven. Six. Because when you're staging a completely futile political tantrum, you might as well go big.
This is pure clown town, as commentator Mark Hemingway put it. And he's being generous.
Cohen unveiled his doomed-on-arrival impeachment push on May 23, 2026, complete with a statement so breathlessly dramatic you'd think Roberts had committed actual crimes instead of just ruling in ways Democrats don't like. "The Supreme Court was once a proud and credible institution," Cohen declared. "Even if one disagreed with a position, there was respect for the analysis, thoroughness, and process. Under Chief Justice Roberts stewardship, it is now understood as biased: with decisions designed to benefit Republicans at the expense of representative government."
Translation: we lost, and we're mad about it.
Cohen went on to say he had "come to the unfortunate conclusion that while John Roberts remains Chief Justice, correcting this misconduct and ensuring the Justices and the Court itself comply with their legal obligations will be impossible."
So his solution to a Chief Justice he doesn't like is impeachment articles that will never — and I mean never — see a vote in the Republican-controlled House. Brilliant strategy. Really using those taxpayer dollars wisely in Memphis.
The specific grievance driving Cohen's meltdown? The Supreme Court's Callais decision, which allowed Tennessee to redraw congressional districts, including splitting Cohen's own Memphis district into three pieces. So this isn't really about the integrity of the judiciary. It's about Steve Cohen's job security. At least have the decency to admit it, congressman.
The internet reaction was exactly what you'd expect. Conservative commentator Casey Mattox delivered perhaps the best response, asking Cohen: "Why are you urging Donald Trump to make Clarence Thomas Chief Justice?" Because that's the beautiful irony here — even if Cohen's fantasy somehow played out and Roberts was removed, President Trump would be the one picking the replacement. Did he think that part through? Spoiler: he did not.
As Twitchy reported, the whole spectacle is being widely mocked as the performative tantrum it so obviously is. Six articles of impeachment against John Roberts — the same John Roberts that the left spent years celebrating as their secret ally on the Court whenever he sided with them. Remember when Roberts saved Obamacare? Democrats loved him then. Funny how that works.
This is what happens when a party runs out of ideas. They can't win elections in enough states to control the House. They can't pack the Court because they don't have the votes. They can't amend the Constitution because they can't get anywhere near the threshold. So they file impeachment articles that everyone — including Cohen himself, if he's being honest — knows will die in committee without so much as a hearing.
It's the legislative equivalent of screaming into a pillow. Feels good for a second, accomplishes absolutely nothing, and everyone in the room is embarrassed for you.
Six articles. Six! The man wrote a novella of grievances against a Chief Justice and couldn't even get a cosponsor who matters. Meanwhile, his constituents in Memphis are dealing with actual problems — crime, cost of living, infrastructure — and their congressman is busy writing political fan fiction about impeaching Supreme Court justices.
Keep it up, Steve. Every minute you spend on this circus is a minute you're not doing something actually destructive.
