Joe Biden shuffled up to the podium at Jesse Jackson’s funeral last Friday and delivered what may be the single most self-unaware speech in the history of American eulogies. The man who couldn’t locate a complete sentence for four years, who had to be helped off stages, who dropped out of a presidential race after getting demolished by a teleprompter, stood in a Chicago church and informed the grieving crowd that he is “a hell of a lot smarter than most of you.”
At a funeral. For someone else.
To be fair, Biden did try to explain himself. He was making a point about stuttering — about how people assume you’re dumb when you can’t get words out. Which is a genuinely touching sentiment, and would have landed beautifully if it hadn’t come from the same man whose cognitive decline became a national crisis and whose own staff described him, on the record, as “a shell of himself” by the time they finally pried the nuclear codes out of his hands.
The full quote, for the record: “It’s the one place where people think you’re stupid. Oh, really? I’m a hell of a lot smarter than most of you.”
The crowd laughed. Biden’s response? “What the hell are you laughing? That’s forty times two plus…”
He never finished the sentence. The math died somewhere between his brain and his mouth, which, if you think about it, is a pretty good summary of the last four years.
This was Jesse Jackson’s funeral. The man who marched with Dr. King, who ran for president twice, who spent decades as one of the most recognizable figures in American civil rights history. The service lasted more than five hours. Jennifer Hudson sang. Barack Obama spoke. Bill Clinton spoke. And then Joe Biden shuffled up and made it about Joe Biden — before pivoting to a rambling monologue about Nelson Mandela and announcing that Africa is going to be “the largest continent in the world in terms of population” by 2050.
Watch, man. Watch.
He also reprised the lifeguard story. Again. For what has to be the fortieth time in public life, Biden reminded everyone that he was the only white lifeguard on the east side of Wilmington and that they named the swimming pool after him. “The Biden swimming pool.” He’s been telling this story since roughly the Eisenhower administration and he still can’t get through it without losing the thread.
Now — and we cannot stress this enough — this man has Stage 4 prostate cancer that has metastasized to the bone. His office released a statement just last month confirming the diagnosis with a Gleason score of 9. That is as aggressive as prostate cancer gets. We genuinely wish him no ill. That is a terrible thing to face.
But this is the same person who, while battling Stage 4 bone cancer and struggling to complete a sentence about arithmetic, walked into a funeral and volunteered that he is smarter than the room.
Kamala Harris, who was also there, opened her remarks with a dig at Donald Trump. (“I predicted a lot about what’s happening right now. I’m not here to say ‘I told you so.'”) So apparently the former vice president also looked at Jesse Jackson’s homegoing service and thought: good opportunity to get some shots in. The Democrats showed up to a funeral and turned it into a rally. Classy bunch.
The “smarter than most of you” line went immediately viral, as it deserved to. The crowd at the House of Hope was overwhelmingly Black — the community that Jesse Jackson spent his entire life fighting for — and the guest speaker from Delaware decided to use the occasion to establish his intellectual superiority over them. The X account Libs of TikTok summed it up cleanly: Biden “just told the attendees at Jesse Jackson’s memorial service that they’re dumb.”
“Does he know he’s at a funeral?” wrote one user.
“That’s scary he thinks he’s smart at all,” wrote another.
Both excellent questions.
For context: the Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year that Biden is “struggling to cash in on his presidency” because organizations don’t want to pay him to speak. They’ll happily write checks to Obama, Clinton, even Kamala Harris — but nobody is lining up to book the guy who stares into middle distance and starts sentences he can’t finish. When even the speaker circuit doesn’t want you, it might be time to reconsider the “smartest guy in the room” positioning.
Joe Biden spent four years being propped up by a staff that hid his decline from the American people, got outmaneuvered by a debate podium, and exited the White House with a national debt, an open border, and an approval rating in the ditch.
But sure, Joe. Hell of a lot smarter than most of us.
Jesse Jackson deserved better than this. Frankly, so did the math.
