Sweden — the country every liberal on Earth pointed to as the shining example of how open borders were supposed to work — just cut asylum applications by 95% from their 2015 peak. And it's working so well that the only person publicly losing her mind about it is 23-year-old Greta Thunberg, a woman whose primary qualification is yelling at world leaders about carbon emissions.
According to The Spectator, Sweden recorded just 6,700 asylum applications last year — the lowest number since 1985. That's not a typo. The country that spent a decade lecturing the entire Western world about compassion and inclusion just slammed the door shut harder than your uncle closing the conversation at Thanksgiving when someone brings up pronouns.
So how'd they do it? Sweden's conservative government, which took office in 2022, actually tried something radical: enforcing the law. They built special return centers for rejected asylum seekers with a four-week maximum stay before deportation. They required new asylum and work permit applications to be submitted from the applicant's country of origin — not from inside Sweden. They toughened citizenship requirements and tightened benefit conditions.
In other words, they did exactly what we've been saying for years. And it worked.
Swedish parliament member Fredrik Karrholm, author of the book "Gangster Violence," put it perfectly: "In Sweden, the system has until now often penalized the honest and rewarded the dishonest." Sound familiar? That could be the tagline for every American border town from El Paso to Eagle Pass.
Now here's the part that should terrify every open-borders cheerleader in Washington. Twenty percent of Sweden's population is now foreign-born. One in five. The Swedes looked at that number, looked at the gang violence, looked at the social costs, and said "enough." And the results speak for themselves.
But Greta Thunberg — who apparently ran out of weather to scold — has pivoted to denouncing the immigration crackdown as inhumane. Because of course she has. When you've built your entire brand on performative outrage, you don't just retire quietly. You find a new thing to be furious about.
Here's what the open-borders crowd doesn't want you thinking about. The Spectator lays out the demographic math that makes mass migration a permanent pressure, not a temporary crisis. In 1900, Europe had roughly 300 million inhabitants while Africa had about 140 million. Today? The EU sits at around 450 million while Africa has surged past 1.5 billion. More than 50% of Middle Eastern youth aged 18-24 want to emigrate. Nearly 50% of African youth in the same age group say the same thing.
That's not a wave. That's an ocean. And the only countries that will survive it are the ones willing to build the seawall.
Sweden built theirs. A 95% reduction in asylum applications. Return centers with four-week deadlines. Applications processed abroad, not after someone has already planted roots. Tougher standards for citizenship and benefits. Every single policy the left told us was "impossible" and "cruel" — implemented and delivering results.
Meanwhile, we've got a wide-open southern border and politicians in Washington who still think "comprehensive immigration reform" means amnesty with a bow on it.
If Sweden — the global capital of progressive guilt — can figure this out, what exactly is our excuse? The template is sitting right there. Enforce the law, close the loopholes, deport the people who aren't supposed to be here, and stop letting 23-year-old climate activists set your national policy.
