Trump Just Fired Kristi Noem — And Replaced Her with a Guy Who Once Challenged a Teamster to a Fight

Kristi Noem learned something every Washington insider eventually learns: if you contradict the president in front of Congress, you’re not staying at DHS. You’re becoming an “Envoy.”

Noem testified that Trump approved a $220 million ad campaign to promote deportation flights. Trump said he had no idea what she was talking about. That’s the kind of disagreement that doesn’t get resolved over lunch — it gets resolved with a new job title and a cardboard box.

As of March 31, Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma becomes Secretary of Homeland Security. You may remember Mullin as the senator who told Teamsters boss Sean O’Brien to “stand your butt up” and invited him to settle it right there in the Senate chamber. During a hearing. With cameras rolling. The man tried to start a fistfight in the United States Senate and somehow that makes him more qualified to run DHS right now.

Noem, meanwhile, gets shuffled off to “Envoy for the Shield of the Americas.” That is Washington-speak for “we needed somewhere to put you.” The Shield of the Americas is a missile defense initiative, which is real and important, but the title is also what you give someone when they’re done making decisions and you need them to attend conferences in friendly countries for a few years.

To be fair to Noem, she wasn’t terrible at DHS. Deportation numbers went up, illegal crossings went down, and she was willing to go on television and defend tough policies when most politicians would’ve hidden behind “nuance.” But Washington doesn’t reward loyalty to the policy. It rewards loyalty to the principal.

Mullin is a different animal. Former plumber, former MMA fighter, and the guy who made a union boss flinch during a Senate hearing. The left is already having a meltdown — which is generally a sign the pick is working as intended.

The media is going to spend the next two weeks asking whether Mullin is “qualified.” These are the same people who thought Alejandro Mayorkas was doing a great job while five million people walked across the southern border unchecked. We’ll take the guy who wants to fight a Teamster over the guy who waved the caravan through.

The real story here isn’t the drama. It’s that Trump still moves fast. Noem testified on a Thursday. By Monday, she had a new title and a successor. That’s not chaos — that’s accountability operating at a speed Washington usually reserves for passing spending bills nobody read.

Mullin takes the desk March 31. We’ll see if the cartels are ready.
